This index comprises the names of all genera ever described in Gesneriaceae (or in related families and relevant in some way to Gesneriaceae) and indicates their present generic position. Links to the corresponding genus pages are provided.

Explanation of entries and typography

  1. The names of the genera presently accepted are printed in italics, in bold face and underlined (link to ghe genus page). For the authorities and publication details see the respective genus page in "The Genera". Example: Achimenes
  2. The names of genera presently held in synonymy are printed in normal font and the authority and year of publication are given. A link to the corresponding genus page is provided. Example: Alagophylla Raf. (1837) = Sinningia
  3. For genera that have been accepted in Kubitzki's "Families and genera of vascular plants, vol. VII" (Weber 2004), but synonymised later on, both the former and the current treatment are indicated (see "Content of genus pages" and introductory remarks in "The Genera"). Example: Acanthonema Hook.f. (1862) = [Acanthonema] = Streptocarpus
  4. Hybrid names [(e.g. x Eucodonopsis Van Houtte (1865)] are not considered.

  • This genus (not referred to in Weber 2004) was described by Baillon from New Caledonia [Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Paris I: 731 (1888) & Hist. des pl. X: 85 (1888)] and referred to Gesneriaceae. It was excluded from that family already by Fritsch (in Engler & Prantl, Nat. Pflanzenfam. IV/3B, 1893-94). Burtt (Notes Roy. Bot. Gard. Edinburgh 24: (1963: 217) followed him and noted that Baillon's description seems to justify the exclusion "although no one has yet suggested where it ought to be classified". In the meantime, there is clear vidence that Periomphale belongs to the family Alseuosmiaceae (ord. Asterales) and is a synonym of Wittsteinia F.Muell.
