Important notes
The genus Brookea, established by Bentham in 1876 in Scrophulariaceae, has been occasionally affiliated to Gesneriaceae, but was listed under "Excluded Genera" in Weber (2004). Bentham placed the genus along with Chelone and Penstemon, and Wettstein (1891) explicitely referred it to tribe Cheloneae. If this is correct (no molecular data are available yet), Brookea would belong to Plantaginaceae.

Etymology: Named after Charles Brooke (1829-1936), the second Rajah of Sarawak.

Type species: Brookea dasyantha Benth.
Notes: The genus Brookea was originally described in Scrophulariaceae by Bentham (1876). The flowers are somewhat similar to Gesneriaceae, but the genus is certainly out of place here. Weber (2004), therefore, listed Brookea under "Excluded Genera". Fischer (2004) referred the genus to Scrophulariaceae-Bowkerieae, which group is now Stilbaceae. By some authors (e.g., Wettstein 1891) it was thought to be a member of Cheloneae in Plantaginaceae, a position also addressed by Neo et al. (2019) in their recent revision of the genus.
