 Important notes

The genus Anodiscus is presently not accepted. It was included in the redefined genus Gloxinia by Roalson, Boggan & Skog, Selbyana 25(2): 228 (2005), representing one of three species.

The name of the only species reads now Gloxinia xanthophylla (Poepp.) Roalson & Boggan.

Full name and orig. publication: Anodiscus Benth., in Benth. & Hook. f., Gen. pl. 2: 998 (1876).

Etymology: From the Greek α, a, αν, an = without, lacking, and δισκος, diskos (Latin discus) = disc, alluding to the lacking disc.

Description: Terrestrial, perennial herbs, 0,5-2 m tall, vegetative and floral characters as in Kohleria, but corolla white and nectary lacking.

Chromosome numbers: 2n = 26 (Wiehler 1983, but no clear documentation so far, J.K. Boggan, pers. comm.).

Type and only species: A. xanthophyllus (Poepp. & Endl.) Mansf.

Distribution and ecology: In the Andes of Ecuador and Peru.

Ecology: Plants growing on slopes in rain forests, in exposed places and roadsides.
